New reporter to bolster education coverage at The Daily Herald

The Daily Herald, in partnership with the national service program Report for America, has hired Mallory Gruben to report on education in Snohomish County.

Gruben comes from Tillamook, Oregon, where she has been freelancing for publications along the north-central Oregon coast, including the Newport News-Times and The Astorian. Prior to that she spent more than two years covering a variety of news at The Daily News in Longview.

Gruben grew up in Eckley, Colorado, a town of about 230 people in northeast Colorado. She is a Summa Cum Laude graduate of Hastings College, where she served as editor in chief of the student newspaper, The Collegian.

At the Herald, Gruben will focus on K-12 education.

“I’m excited to be able to fill that news gap in the community with my coverage — especially at a time when a lot of attention is on the school system in our country,” Gruben said. “This position is made sweeter by the fact that I’ll join a stellar team of reporters in Everett and become part of the talented Report for America Corps. The Herald and RFA are two organizations that embody my personal drive to support and grow local news coverage across the nation.”

Report for America is an initiative of The GroundTruth Project. The nonprofit journalism organization places journalists into local newsrooms to report on under-covered issues and communities. This year, more than 300 RFA corps members will be working in more than 200 newsrooms in all 50 states, Washington DC, Puerto Rico and Guam.

Gruben begins work in June.

“We’re excited to have an already accomplished reporter join our staff to enhance our coverage of our local schools,” Executive Editor Phillip O’Connor said. “Mallory will help bring more even more focus to a topic that impacts every Snohomish County resident. Her hiring also speaks to the ongoing generosity and commitment of our community to find new ways to support local journalism.”

Report for America employs a unique funding match model, paying part of a corps member’s salary while encouraging local and regional funders to contribute as well.
